Children in a hamlet of Quang Nam Province have been waiting for 3 years for their new school and they have yet to get it. The existing school does not have enough classrooms for them and a new school went under construction 3 years ago.

The school, which has not been completed, is in Z’ruot Hamlet, A Tieng Commune, Tay Giang District. The new school will have 3 classrooms. Two of them have been built. The remaining one needs only a roof to be completed as well as a roof for the toilet.

Ploong Ha, Head of Z’ruot Hamlet said, “We have patiently waited for 3 years and still, we have no new school. Nobody has come to build a roof for the last classroom and the toilet. Meanwhile, we do not have enough classrooms for our children to study.”

Ploong Ha took us to an old school in his hamlet that shares a small yard and a pathway with locals. Ho Thi Tuyet, a 3rd grade teacher shared, “We gather pupils from different classes to study together in one classroom so that we have enough space for all students. However, students are often distracted by the activities of locals around here.”

Huynh Kim Tin, Director of Tay Giang District’s Department of Education & Training explained, “The progress has been delayed because of the financial shortage. The People’s Committee of Tay Giang District helped us report the current situation of school construction here to higher level authorities in a bid to speed up the progress.”

Quang Nam Province’s Department of Education & Training has invested over VND7 billion ($362,165) since late 2007 in building new schools located in hamlets of needy communes. However, construction of many new schools has not been completed, causing difficulties for teaching and learning in this area. When these new schools are put into use, children here will finally be able to study properly. A new school year is coming but children in this impoverished area will still have to wait for their new school.
